Frequently Asked Questions

What materials do you use?

The Spotted Gum timber frame is locally sourced. All ceramic mounts are handmade. The fabric is 100% silk and is hand dyed and printed with natural dye stuffs such as botanicals, plant matter, minerals, non-toxic metals and food waste. Tapestries mounted with ceramic pieces are adhered to the wall using strong magnets.

How do I maintain my silk tapestry?

Any dust that has gathered on the timber frame may be wiped away with a dry cloth. Do not use any moisture or cleaning liquids as this may affect the colour balance in the dyes on the tapestry. To release any dust that has gathered on the tapestry, remove the tapestry and take it outside. Sway the tapestry gently from side to side or hold one side of the silk and gently ripple the fabric. The fabric should never be washed.

Because of the nature of the delicate silk material coupled with the dying process, the fabric often has some minor wrinkles permanently pressed into the material. This is unavoidable and is part of what gives the artwork dimension. Each piece has been pressed before packaging and is shipped in a way to avoid further permanent wrinkles from developing. If you are not hanging your tapestry right away, store it somewhere where it is laying perfectly flat or hanging freely. For example you can place the timber frame on the edge of a table and let the fabric hang down over the edge.

How and where should I mount my tapestry?

Each tapestry arrives with the mounting hardware you should need for a standard plasterboard wall.

As is the case with all artwork, placement of the piece in direct sunlight can affect the colour vibrancy over an extended period of time. Each tapestry has been pre-treated with a dye fixative to avoid fading and the natural dyes chosen are ones that are colour-fast. However, the piece is still alive with natural dyes and materials and therefore it is recommended to not place the tapestry on a wall that receives direct sunlight.
